“The movie is littered with absolutely lovely 8-bit reimaginings of the film’s characters, settings, and even marks the film’s four acts with “level” screens. The choice, one that is visually appealing and nostalgia-driven, is so smart that it nearly bowled me over.”

TETRIS
APPLE TV+
We got more than a little misty-eyed and excited when MARV asked us to re-create 8-bit inspired graphics for their feature film ‘Tetris’.
Complementing the 1980’s aesthetic, helping to establish locations and characters, and injecting even more nostalgic fun to proceedings, this most pixelated of projects involved us working at 1/10 the scale that we normally would, before upscaling the results for film audiences. We looked at 40 years of Tetris evolution in designing a look and feel across the work, blending After Effects and dedicated pixel art software to achieve retro yet crisp perfection.
Encapsulating the continuing allure of pixel art, Senior Motion Designer Danny Boyle who led the project at Coffee & TV said:
“It’s an immediate, charming way of working, there’s no distance between you and the process. Working in this joyful, nimble way was really really fun.”
Based on the true story of American video game salesman Henk Rogers and his discovery of the game in 1988, ‘Tetris’ is directed by Jon S. Baird and starring Taron Egerton. Now available to watch on Apple TV+.
