Q

Who or what inspired you to get into the industry & why ?

Derek

I had far too much fun in 6th form at school to get the A level grades I needed to go to a good university. During my holidays I had been lucky enough to work as a runner on some music video shoots, so I decided to take the back-up option of a TV course at Ravensbourne. From there I got a job as a tape op at MPC and the rest is (ancient) history.

Q

What is the best or most useful bit of industry knowledge you’ve gained?

Derek

Be kind. Although our industry can be great fun, it is also extremely stressful at times and you never know what struggles people are coping with.

Q

Who is the most inspirational / interesting person you’ve met?

Derek

I’ve been around for a while, so I’ve been lucky enough to meet some amazing people, both in our industry and outside of it. I think my favourite memory was walking into a VFX suite with a new system called ‘Quantel Henry’ in it that I’d only had a little play with a few days before. I knew I was booked on it to make a music video, but I didn’t expect George Michael to be sitting in my seat! He was lovely and didn’t seem to realise I had no idea what I was doing, or at least if he did he didn’t let on!
